Memories
E-mail your Montague memory Posted May 1, 2006
I grew up in Compton, California and remember you as the most charismatic radio DJ ever. You were the best way to start the day. What an exciting time that was! You were so entertaining and knowledgeable. And we all could tell that you just loved your job. This made life a little easier for the people of the greater Los Angeles area during those early days before the Watts riot. Burn, Baby! Burn! Thank you for your great contribution to the world of great radio. Your legacy cannot be duplicated ever.

Montague:
In 1965 I was a 14 year old student in Los Angeles. My fondest memories are of listening to you every morning before I went to junior high school. Hearing you first thing after I awakened was really an energizing experience that started my day. I still remember and believe today as I did then that you are indeed the "Mangnificent One". God bless you and thanks for the memories.

During the summer of 1955 I remember listening to your show on WAAF. The other shows were Marty Faye, Dick Buckley ( and Ray Wheat?), and (perhaps) Studs Terkel. I remember the trumpet call and you refering to yourself as " .. Sometimes called great!" (We were working as draftsmen in a basement on 109th street in Chicago and had the radio on all day.)

I was 24 when I first heard MM. I am from Barbados and was studying at NYU from 1962-1966. I took all afternoon classes so that I would sleep late in the mornings after listening to MM rap. I was fascinated by his style and the way in which he preached his secular message. Great show.

I have dark circles under my eyes today after staying up many a night (I think you came on around midnight here in NY) just to hear your fantastic theme song (let's get some church up in here). I was truly one of your "darlin's."
It has to be well over 40 years, but I remember it well. --Sandra Walker
Thank you Sandra, my darling. It is exactly 41 years since I worked on WWRL. If my plans work out, you may be hearing Magnificent Montague back on the air in New York next year!

The Sam Cooke dialogue takes me back. It was a beautiful rendering of friendship, of a love for music and of each other.
